ILCAA Joint Research Project

Multi-disciplinary Study on the Interactions between Islamism and Socio-cultural Factors in Southeast Asia-Transnational Networks and Local Responses
Project term: April, 2020-March, 2023
Project Coordinator: Hisao Tomizawa
The general goal of this project is to clarify the impacts of Islamic transnational networks including those based on so called Islamism (or various versions of it) on local societies and cultures of various Southeast Asian countries mainly through the members' field researches. In this study, we are also to re-examine the local responses and reactions to the impacts of transnational Islam from a comparative perspective. For this purpose, we will invite researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds, such as anthropology, history, political science, area studies and Islamic studies, to contribute to the project. We will organize various workshops and/or conferences both at ILCAA (Tokyo) and at the Kota Kinabalu Liaison Office (KKLO) in Malaysia, an international research office of ILCAA. This is an advanced research project based on the preceding three-term project "Multi-disciplinary Study on Islam and Cultural Diversity in Southeast Asia".

Reconsideration on Death: Anthropological Explorations on the Actuality of life
Project term: April, 2021-March, 2024
Project Coordinator: Ryoko Nishii
Employing anthropological field practices to study death, this research project aims to reconsider the actuality of life from new perspectives. Death--whether one's own death or someone else's death--is an experience that is fundamental to our reality. In this research project, we approach the actuality of life by focusing on the boundary between life and death, and consider cases of death caused by events such as the Great East Japan Earthquake or new coronavirus infections. This study also examines the multi-death society, the field of nursing care, the medicalization of death, and the transformation of funeral rites amidst ongoing changes in everyday life.
